Sometimes being a tough boss is simply having the courage to give direct feedback and let people know how you’re experiencing them. If we can do it without shame or judgment, we can help them discover power and abilities within themselves that they didn’t know they had. And being willing to hold people (including ourselves) accountable and invite them to do their best is our job as a leader. Sometimes, this is mistaken for a lack of willingness to be the 'tough boss'. I talk a lot about bringing kindness and humanity into leadership - being willing to be vulnerable and authentic.
